When parking is in short supply, spaces become battle grounds. Cars circle waiting for someone to leave. Residents of these destinations find their usual ‘spots’ are gone, so they take action. Walls are painted, home made signs are erected and cones are placed. All to show that there’s ‘No Parking’.
This series looks at the background of these signs, the environment in which they are displayed, the different architecture that forms the backdrop, the styles of the signs – haphazard, professional looking, friendly, polite, irate. It will also ask how potential parkers view the signs. Would they ignore them or abide?
The project was inspired from when I was travelling around Wales on holiday and wanting to visit places but had to drive around to find somewhere to park. I was trying to avoid paying the ransom that some car parks charge.
